Entries from June 2007
Having taken an annual leave from my work on Friday, 22 June 2007, I believe I’ve spend enough time on the bed, sleeping and hibernating, conserving energy for my big day on Saturday. Yes, due to monsoon rain that hit almost every afternoon throughout the past few days in Kuching, I’m behind my scores, for both distance and speed goals. So, I decide to do some catch up on Saturday, 23 June 2007.
It was a wonderful morning, fairly sunny and less traffic. I started slowly by speed walking for a mile to warm-up the muscles, then some stretching. My target was to run as far as I could (certainly with a goal to smashed the 2nd longest distance record). My strategy is to run slowly at a pace of 6 to 6’ 30” per km and maintain a steady heart rate and breathing (damn it, I wish I got my new Heart Rate Watch with me today).
After 1 hour 45 minutes of running, I pull it off at 16.09 km. For the 1st time, I can really feel the exhaustion on my body especially my knees. I believe I can go further than this, physically but not mentally. Somehow, by knowing that you’re almost there (getting near to breaking your previous record), the last round seems to last forever.

I guessed Yuri was right all the way, ‘the mind is the weakest link’…

Found something interesting that puzzles me all this time. It’s the answer to why I feel ‘good’ when I start running seriously. These are some of the excerpt from the Newsweek Magazine. You can find the full article here, really worth to read.
‘Exercise does more than build muscles and help prevent heart disease. New science shows that it also boost brainpower and may offer hope in the battle against Alzheimer’s.’
‘For the first time, scientists have coaxed the human brain into growing new nerve cells –simply by putting subjects on a 3 month aerobic workout regimen’.
‘Regular exercise builds up the body’s levels of BDNF (a Miracle Gro) for the brain that is critical for learning, memory and many other processes of higher thought.
‘For kids, even a few games of kickball can boost the brain in widespread, long-lasting ways- which is why some teachers are lobbying for more time Physical Education class’.

Well, this really redefines the meaning of ‘running smart’. I bet Einstein would be even smarter if he workout more.

Just added in a Clustr Map widget into the right bar. With it, now I can see where my visitors are coming from. As I start to covers distances in my quest, virtually I will ‘run’ across some of these countries.

Well, I’ve yet to decide which path and continents to go as its quite tricky in a sense. The total distance of 40,043 km or 24,881 miles is the total distance including oceans and lands. In my definition, it means I’ll be running in a straight line and returning to the same starting point where I started previously.

I’ve chosen the great Cat Statue of Kuching at as my starting point. Hope it’s still around after I complete the run, that is sometime around year 2030!

As of today, having running for 188 km or 117 miles, this is the how far I’ve reached. Simply astonishing ! Folks at Miri, I’ll be there soon.

Apart from Nike+ official graphing tool hosted in the Nike server, there are actually tons of 3rd party servers out there offering such service. These servers are hosted by the running community to further improve and to maximize the Nike+ capability. As far as I’m concern, it adds more colors and making it more appealing and interesting.

Before the idea of Running Around The World ever existed in my head, I ran once per week, normally on Saturday evening. After the idea struck me, I ran 2 to 3 times per week. After I got myself the Nike+ Kit to log down all my runs, I now ran 4 to 5 times per week which consists of after office hours and as early as 6am in the weekend while everybody else is still sleeping. Unbelievable!.
.

This is my 1st goal set to challenge myself to run as often as possible in 4 weeks (no muscles and hips are hurt in the making), and guess what? It’s a piece of cake. For the month of June, I’m setting a total of 11 runs as a target. Maybe it just an increment of 1 run, but my definition for ‘a run’ is a distance not less than 5km per run (subjected to weather of course).
